Rationale for the course A programme on Development Studies in India has to be rooted in the specific developmental experience of India in a historical perspective. This course serves that purpose. This course would provide the students with the broad developmental context in which they would be able to absorb ideas from other courses. Objectives of the course The major objectives of this course are (a) to familiarise students with the basic features of India’s economy and its key economic institutions as they have evolved since independence; (b) to introduce the students to contemporary issues in India’s development in an analytical-historical perspective; and (c) to discuss the policies of “economic reform” in India in a critical framework.
